2000 Andrea Doria Photos I

All images on this page © 2000 by Christina Young.

These are pictures from the 2000 Seeker / Mad Dog 3-day expedition to the Andrea Doria, approximately 107 miles off Montauk, New York, under 250 feet of water in the North Atlantic, which took place on July 29-31, 2000.

For more information on the Andrea Doria, the Grand Dame of the Sea, check out the New Jersey Scuba Diving Andrea Doria Exhibit and the Seeker's Andrea Doria page.

Everyone on the boat loads and sets up their gear in the evening, before we leave Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk, New York.
This is Daniel Persson and Hakan Johansson, two of our Swedish contingent of four.  They flew all the way from Sweden just for this expedition.
Before we leave Star Island, Captain Danny Crowell gives us the big briefing.
We arrive on site after the voyage lasting approximately 8 hours.  The Wahoo has arrived about a half hour before us, and is attempting to hook the wreck.
Capt. Steve Belienda (right, center) waves to me as I am shooting video.
Petie Wohlleben and George Place suit up to set the hook, assisted by Steve Brozyna (left) and Terry Martzall (center left).
Petie Wohlleben splashes.
George Place splashes.
This is looking down at the wreck during descent.  The wreck has changed so much that it's a far cry from the way it looked last year!  The promenade and boat decks, which were so beautiful in last year's pictures, have collapsed and are completely gone!  George and Petie tied us into a nice spot, approximately halfway between the bow and the stern.
