The SS Carolina was a 380 foot long passenger liner sunk in WWI by the U-151 on "Black Sunday", June 2, 1918, along with five other ships, including the freighter Texel and collier Winneconne.  The wreck was discovered and dived in 1995 after extensive research by John Chatterton and John Yurga.  The Carolina lies in 250 feet of water approximately 65 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

For additional information on the background about the SS Carolina, please consult the SS Carolina Virtual Museum and the Seeker's Carolina page.

The following pictures (all images from video) are from the voyage of the Seeker to the SS Carolina, Sunday, June 25, 2000 (continued from page II).

Gene Holmes and Joe Mazraani with a demitasse saucer and dinner plate from the Carolina.  The elegant logo in the china says, "New York and Porto Rico Steamship Company".
Mike Trapani with the same cafeteria plate he recovered from the Goulandris a couple weeks ago.  Just kidding!!!  ;-)
John Yurga, with a brass fire extinguisher he recovered.
John Chatterton, with a Carolina toilet seat that he plans to actually use.  Toilet paper supplied by Gary Gentile!
Mike Pizzio with a beautiful brass light fixture.
John Yurga with a vegetable dish and dinner plate.
Gary with his HUGE lobster.  As you can see, the lobster is much bigger than he is.  ;-)
Much to Gary's shock, the lobster is still very much alive and lunges at Christina!  Here she struggles to save certain sensitive body parts after they are grabbed by the lobster's powerful pincher and crusher claws!
The feisty lobster is loose on the boat (Christina got away), and jumps on top of Mike Trapani!
John Chatterton and Gary Gentile went to pull the hook at the end of our time out there.  They also decided that it would be a good time to raise the 1st Class Purser's safe that John found a few years back.  So after careful planning and execution, two large lift bags pop to the surface!
Joe Mazraani swims a line and float out to the lift bags.
Bill Cleary and John Yurga prepare the rigging on the boom to hoist the safe aboard.
The safe is lifted out of the water.  From left to right are Joe Ferrali, John Yurga and Bill Cleary, with Joe Mazraani in the water.
